Mary was born in 1816.  Mary's father was Donald MacDonald and her mother is Hannah Russell.  Her paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; her maternal grandparents are William Russell and Catherine McLean.  She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Archibald, Donald, Malcolm, Catherine and Flora.  She is the oldest of the seven children.
