John was born in 1893.  John's father was Thomas Mowat and his mother was Elizabeth Bruce.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mowat and Janet Donaldson.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Robert, William, Jessie, Elizabeth, Jane and Marjory.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
