John was born in 1860.  John's father was Andrew Mowat and his mother was Elizabeth Reid.  His paternal grandparents were John Mowat and Barbara MacKay.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Donald, Andrew, Hugh, Hughina, Barbara, Elizabeth, Jessie and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
