George was born in 1896.  George's father is Alexander Matheson and his mother is Jane Gray.  His paternal grandfather is Alexander Matheson and his paternal grandmother was Margaret Begg; his maternal grandparents are John Gray and Alexandrina Keith.  He has seven brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, John, William, James, David, Donald, Alexander, Jessie and Greta.  He is the nineth oldest of the ten children.
