Alexander was born in 1877.  Alexander's father is Alexander Matheson and his mother is Jane Gray.  His paternal grandfather is Alexander Matheson and his paternal grandmother was Margaret Begg; his maternal grandparents are John Gray and Alexandrina Keith.  He has seven brothers and two sisters, named John, William, James, David, Donald, Alexander, George, Jessie and Greta.  He is the oldest of the ten children.
