Hothum was born in 1839.  Hothum's father was George MacKenzie and his mother was Susannah Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were Marcus MacKenzie and Margaret Forbes; his maternal grandparents were William Taylor and Jean Forbes.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Marcus, William, Thomas, Margaret, Jane and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
