Alexander was born in 1851.  Alexander's father was William Lawson and his mother was Ann Seath.  His paternal grandparents were William Lawson and Catharine Chalmers; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Seath and Christina Wilson.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Andrew, Christina, Catherine and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
