Sydney was born in 1893.  Sydney's father was George Campbell and her mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  Her paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Margaret MacKenzie; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Mowat and Elizabeth Reid.  She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, George, Lizzie, Maggie, Hughina and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
