Helen was born in 1856.  Helen's father was John Bruce and her mother was Ann Christian.  Her paternal grandparents were William Bruce and Helen Dunnet; her maternal grandparents were John Christian and Jean Tait.  She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Alexander, George, Jean, Janet, Ann and Isabella.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
