Alexander was born in 1866.  Alexander's father was John Bruce and his mother was Ann Christian.  His paternal grandparents were William Bruce and Helen Dunnet; his maternal grandparents were John Christian and Jean Tait.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, John, George, Jean, Helen, Janet, Ann and Isabella.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.  He died due to natural causes or old age.
