Walter was born in 1853.  Walter's father is James Bisset and his mother was Christian Thomson.  His paternal grandparents are James Bisset and Betty Maxwell; his maternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Margaret Penman.  He has two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Margaret and Isabella.  He is the third oldest of the five children.
