James was born in 1849.  James' father is James Bisset and his mother was Christian Thomson.  His paternal grandparents are James Bisset and Betty Maxwell; his maternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Margaret Penman.  He has two brothers and two sisters, named Walter, William, Margaret and Isabella.  He is the oldest of the five children.
