Benjamin was born on January 20th, 1849 in Effingham County, Illinois.  Benjamin's father was Dr. Newton Edward Tarrant and his mother was Mary Ann Sharp (Tarrant). He had four brothers named William, Leonard, James and George.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 24 on March 20th, 1873 in Effingham County, Illinois.  He was buried at the Rentfro Cemetery.
