Rufus was born on February 3rd, 1915 in Fifty-Six, Arkansas.  Rufus' father was John Henry Smith and his mother was Fannie Jane Sutterfield (Smith).  His paternal grandparents were John A. Smith and Mary Jane Sexton (Smith). He had nine brothers and four sisters, named John, Arlis, Arvil, Loren, Clarence, Joseph, Roy, James, Henry, Mary, Easter, Barbra and Ruby.  He died at the age of 56 on November 11th, 1971 at Ball Memorial Hospital.  The funeral took place on November 13th, 1971 in Muncie, Indiana and was arranged by Meeks Mortuary.  He was buried in Elm Ridge Memorial Park.^1 2 1
