Jan was born in 1678 in Capelle (Noord Brabant) and his baptism took place there on March 13th, 1678.1   His godmother was Geertruyt Jansdr Hovenaer. Jan's father was Ariaen Janszn Hovenaer and his mother was Marie Cornelisdr Vos.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Govertszn Hovenaers and Maijken Jansdr. He had a brother named Cornelis.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Teunis Ariaen, Teunis and Mayken Adriaensdr.
