Jan Christoffel was born in August 1742 in Amsterdam and his baptism took place there on August 24th, 1742 conducted by Reverend Jacobus Boon.1   His godfather was Jan Christoffel de Haas and his godmother was Margreta Elsebe de Haas. Jan Christoffel's father was Coenraat Hendrikszn de Haas and his mother was Engeltje Hubrink.  His maternal grandparents were Gerardus Hubingh and Elisabeth Deckers. He had a brother and three sisters, named Jan Hendrik, Anna Geertruij, Elisabeth and Elisabeth.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
