Martha was born on February 12th, 1845 in Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire.¹ Martha's father was William Hargraves and her mother was Susannah Coates. Her paternal grandparents were John Hargraves and Mary; her maternal grandparents were John Coates and Ann Snell. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, George, Thomas, Richard, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Emma and Eliza. She was the fifth oldest of the fifteen children. She died at the age of 37 in 1882 in Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire. She was buried in 1882 at St Bartholomew, Armley, Leeds, Yorkshire.²³
