Nirmalabai's father is Talakchand Otamchand and her mother is Motibai Bhikha.  Her paternal grandparents are Otamchand Narcinh and Panibai. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Amratlal [Amarethelal], Himatlal, Ratilal, Jasodabai, Tarulata [Travenibai], Mahalaxmi and Ishvari.  She is the second oldest of the eight children.
