John was born on August 8th, 1809 in Colchester, England.  John's father was Jarvis Wharin and his mother was Mary Barber. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Jarvis, Henry, Charles Edward, Ann and Martha.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 97 on October 2nd, 1906.  His burial was in St Mary's Cemetery, Port Elizabeth.
