Ashley was born on August 22nd, 1901. Ashley's father was Ashley Spencer Homewood and his mother was Emily (Freddy) Leather Barlow. His paternal grandparents are Charles Stephenson Homewood and Jane Brown; his maternal grandparents were William Henry Barlow and Sarah Ann Hardwick. He had a brother named Leslie.
