Phyllis was born on January 13th, 1931 in Port Elizabeth. Phyllis' father was James Benjamin Cinnamon and her mother was Violet Rosa Gray. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Cinnamon and Margaret Little; her maternal grandparents were Frank Gray and Cecilia Patterson. She had a brother named Sidney.
