James was born on February 14th, 1749 and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1750 in Benenden, Kent, England.  James' father was Thomas Austen and his mother was Mary Buckwell.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Austen and Elizabeth Vane. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Stephen, John, Joseph, William, Hannah, Sarah, Ann, Margaret Mary, Margaret and Martha.  He was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
