Thomas was born in 1858 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Thomas' father was Edward Wheeler and his mother was Mary Holmes. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Joseph and Eliza.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Harriet.
