John was born in 1855 in Bulford, Wiltshire.1   John's father was Edward Wheeler and his mother was Mary Holmes. He had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Thomas and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Harriet.
