James was born on February 23rd, 1853 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place on February 18th, 1855 in St Mary's, Whitechapel, Middlesex.1   James' father was Stephen James Watson and his mother was Mary Ann Hayes.  His maternal grandparents were William Chetwyn Hayes and Maria Briggs. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Stephen, William, Mary and Rachel.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
