Thomas was born in 1798 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire and his christening took place on December 26th, 1798 in Saint Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Stafford.1 2   Thomas' father was Joseph Turvey and his mother was Eleanor Horton.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Turvey and Sarah Francis. He had two brothers and a sister, named Isaac, Joseph and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the four children.
