Thomas was born in 1838 in Elphin, Roscommon, Ireland.1   Thomas' father was Michael McDermott and his mother was Catherine Pendergast. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 82 in 1920 in Bingara, NSW, Australia.1
