Mary Ann Eliza Darnell

Mary was born on June 4th, 1878 in 23 Menotti Street, Bethnal Green, Middlesex.¹ Mary's father was Francis William Darnell and her mother was Mary Ann Lardant. Her maternal grandparents were James Lardant and Mary Ann Vaughan. She had a sister named Elizabeth. She was the younger of the two children. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, William, Walter and Sarah. She died at the age of 60 in 1938 in Mitcham, Surrey.²

  Mary Ann Eliza was my "Auntie Mary", half-sister to my father Walter Eacott. She was born apparently, not long before my grandmother Mary Ann Darnell became wife or de facto of my grandfather John Eacott. A daughter, Sarah Jane, was born to Mary and John in 1881. When Mary Ann Eliza was married to Robert Abbott in 1899, she had adopted the surname of Eacott.

  Mary lived in Bethnal Green and worked as a fancy box maker along side her mother. When her husband left for America she developed a skin complaint and was unable to work and had to place several of her children into a home . The family never did seem to know where their father finished up or wether he ever came back to Uk. They lost touch with Mary who had been adopted but hearsay that she had worked for the newspapers as a secretary
