William was born in 1717 in Great Wishford, Wiltshire and his christening took place there on August 5th, 1717.1   William's father was Richard Brown and his mother was Ann.  His paternal grandparents were John Brown and Martha Clements. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
