Kath was born in 1920 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.¹ Kath's father was Joseph Rose SHILTON and her mother was Sarah Jane SMITH. Her paternal grandparents were George SHILTON and Ann ROSE. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Cyril, George, Jack, Leonard, Gertrude, Elsie, Edna, Gladys, Winifred and Marjorie. She was the second youngest of the twelve children.
