Edna was born on March 16th, 1909 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.¹ Edna's father was Joseph Rose SHILTON and her mother was Sarah Jane SMITH. Her paternal grandparents were George SHILTON and Ann ROSE. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Cyril, George, Jack, Leonard, Gertrude, Elsie, Gladys, Winifred, Kath and Marjorie. She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
