William was born on September 8th, 1883 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire.1  William's father was Robert LONG and his mother was Sarah PEARCE.  His paternal grandmother was Elizabeth LONG; his maternal grandparents were Samuel PEARCE and Ann TROWE. He had five brothers and six sisters, named George, William, Robert, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alice, Harriett, Annie and Annie.  He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children. He had a half-sister named Sarah.  He died at the age of 78 in 1961 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.2
