John was born in 1859 in Wolverley, Broadwaters Borough, Kidderminster.  John's father was Henry HADDLETON and his mother was Elizabeth LONG.  His paternal grandparents were William HADDLETON and Ann <UNKNOWN>; his maternal grandparents were Richard LONG and Elizabeth SMITH. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, Charles, William, James, Walter, Julia and Annie.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named Robert.
