John was born in 1833 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.  John's father was Joseph BRIERLEY and his mother was Elizabeth <UNKNOWN>. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Charles, William, Joseph, Mark, Hannah and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
