William was born in 1894 in Cornsay Colliery, Durham.  William's father was Charles John ASTON and his mother was Alice Allan LOVE. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Wilfred, Arthur, Vera, Annie and Alice.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
