Szali was born on August 2nd, 1882.  Szali's father was Sigmund (Zusman) Haas and her mother was Rosa Schwartz.  Her paternal grandparents were Josef Haas and Rebeka  Regi Wohl; her maternal grandparents were Shaya Schwartz and Tobe Lea Friedrich. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Asher, Marton, Tini, Berta, Pepi and Teressa Rezi.
