    Dr. Milton Eber, a leading expert on grief and a retired University of Miami professor of psychiatry and clinical psychology, died Thursday from a stroke at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. He was 72.
    With his sly smile, sharp wit and dry sense of humor, Eber put at ease his students at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center and his private patients.
    ``He wasn't your typical stuffy professor,'' his brother Victor said. ``His laid-back manner and not in-your-face sense of humor allowed those around him to relax, learn and open up.''
    Eber was director of the UM-Jackson Outpatient Clinic, Mental Health Division, for nearly four decades. Most of South Florida's practicing psychiatrists who graduated from UM have been in Eber's classroom, his brother said.
    ``He was a source of inspiration to many of his students and residents,'' said Dr. Lyle Kunz, a former student and Miami psychiatrist.
    Eber auth! ored several research articles that were published in national medical journals. Much of his research focused on grief.
    ``People react in paradoxical ways to terrible news,'' Eber told The Herald in 1988. ``Sometimes people laugh. Sometimes people act paralyzed and have no response at all. Denial and repression are common reactions to tragedy, more common in men than women.''
    In 1993, Eber retired from teaching but opened a practice at the Four Ambassadors building in Miami.
    In addition to his brother, Eber is survived by nieces and nephews.
    Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Woodlawn Park, 3201 SW Eighth St. Riverside-Gordon Memorial Chapels is handling the arrangements.
