Samuel was born in 1831 in Barking Essex and his baptism took place on March 18th, 1832 at St Margaret's  Church Barking.1  Samuel's father was Samuel Simmons (Fisherman) and his mother was Margaret Flounders. He had four sisters named Margaret, Mary, Clazyna and Caroline.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 69 in March 1900 in Mutford.  He was buried in Lowestoft.

Samuel and Eliza were married in a religious ceremony on April 23rd, 1854 at St Margaret's Barking.2   They had two sons and two daughters, named Samuel, James, Alice and Ada.
