Emily was born about 1858 in Barking Essex.1   Emily's father was Joseph Norris (Fisherman b Whitechapel) and her mother was Maria Sawyer (b Chadwell Heath).  Her paternal grandfather was Joseph Norris and her paternal grandmother is <Unknown>; her maternal grandfather was Richard Sawyer and her maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. She had four brothers and a sister, named Henry, John, Alfred, William and Clara.  She was the oldest of the six children.
