William was born about 1846 in Barking Essex.  William's father was John of Bromley Newman (Fisherman) and his mother was Sarah Ann Dixon (of Barking).  His maternal grandparents were James Dixon and Sarah  Not Known. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles, Thomas and Emma.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
