Thomas was born about 1850 in Barking Essex.  Thomas' father was John of Bromley Newman (Fisherman) and his mother was Sarah Ann Dixon (of Barking).  His maternal grandparents were James Dixon and Sarah  Not Known. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles, William and Emma.  He was the youngest of the four children.
