William was born about October 1829 in Barking Essex and his christening took place on November 1st, 1829 at St Margaret's  Church Barking.1   William's father was Benjamin Henn (Fisherman) and his mother was Sarah Young.  His paternal grandfather is Richard Henn and his paternal grandmother was Ann Dunsdon. He had a brother and two sisters, named Benjamin, Sarah and Rebecca.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
