His paternal grandparents were Daniel Hancox (Lab b Tysoe Warwickshire) and Miria (b Long Compton Warwick); his maternal grandparents were Edward Crowdey (Corn Porter b Thame Ox) and Emma Howlett. He had two brothers and a sister, named Alfred, Thomas and Emily. He was the oldest of the four children.
