Alfred was born about 1883 in Poplar.  Alfred's father was Daniel Hancox (Corn Porter b Tysoe Warwickshire) and his mother was Emily Crowdey.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel  Hancox (Lab b Tysoe Warwickshire) and Miria (b Long Compton Warwick); his maternal grandparents were Edward Crowdey (Corn Porter b Thame Ox) and Emma Howlett. He had two brothers and a sister, named George, Thomas and Emily.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
