George was born about 1848 in Barking Essex.  George's father was Joseph Grout (Blacksmith/Smacks) and his mother was Jane Sarah Dockerill.  His paternal grandfather was Joseph Grout and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were John Dockerill and Sarah. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, William, Henry, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, Eliza, Julia, Emma and Emily.  He was the second youngest of the eleven children.
