Martha was born in 1846 in Wethersfield Essex.  Martha's father was Joseph of Wetherfield French and her mother was Elizabeth of Finchingfield More.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph French and Jane. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, Thomas, James, Alfred, William, Harry, Arthur, Orpha, Jane, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the twelve children.
