Joseph was born about 1892 in 5 Victoria Terrace Back St Ilford. Joseph's father was George William Farren (b Stratford) and his mother was Ann Gilbert. His paternal grandparents were Timothy Farren (shoemaker - Cordwainer b Colchester) and Elizabeth Bennett (b Ilford); his maternal grandparents are Robert Gilbert (Labourer) and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Timothy, Robert, Rose, Mary, Elizabeth, Jessie, Phoebe and Alice. He was the third youngest of the ten children.
