James was born about 1844 in Barking Essex.  James' father was Samuel Baxter (Fisherman) and his mother was Eliza Nash (of Stratford).  His maternal grandparents were Nash and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Richard, Eliza and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the five children.

James and Clara were married in a religious ceremony in September 1870 in Yarmouth Norfolk.1   They had four daughters named Eliza, Esther, Evon and Ethel.
