Josephine's father was Giovanni "John" C. Rao and her mother was Assunta P. Pelosi.  Her paternal grandparents were Carmelo "Carmine" Rao and Pasqua "Pasqualina" Pensabene. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Carmine A., Raymond G. and Pasqualina "Lee".
