Sidney (Simcha) STRUZA (STROUZER)

• General Notes
  • Steve Strouzer:  Sidney started work at 16 as a barber.  He was involved in the Battle of Cable Street. 1936, stopping the Fascists from marching through the East End.  He joined the Pioneer Corps of the Royal Engineers in 1939, unfit for front line duty as he had a foot problem that prevented him from wearing boots.  Acted as barber and interpreter and was promoted to corporal at one point.  Spent most of the war in Shropshire and Wales, and went to Europe on D8.  Was posted in Belgium France and Germany.  Had a market stall selling shoes after the war, and an unsuccessful shoe business in Norbury, South London for a short time.
    
    Worked as a barber in the Sackville Club Fenchurch street from 1953 until 1979.  After a short break, became the barber at the Carlton Club, St James.Retired in 1994.  Lived alone until December 2002, after which, lived at Carlton Dene residential home on Kilburn Park Road, London.  Died of organ failure and infections at age 89.
    
    Buried in Bushey Jewish Cemetery.
    
    As far as the barbering connection is concerned, all of the brothers were barbers to start with, and great-grandfather Michael in
    Lublin was a barber-surgeon - haircuts, dentistry, minor operations, accoucheur, etc. Zigmund, Isaac, Joseph and Sam were all barbers, my dad was, and so ws his sister Rose (ladies' hairdresser.)
